Budapest, the capital of Hungary is the most popular tourist destination in the country. Also, due to the central location of the city within Hungary, Budapest is well connected through direct plane, train or bus connections with many countries in Europe. Budapest is a global city with nearly 2 million inhabitants and over 40 colleges and universities. Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) is Hungary's oldest continuously operating university. The university has an extensive international network of partner institutions. Currently, about 2,000 international students from over 80 countries study at ELTE. The venue of our conference will be the centrally located campus of the Faculty of Humanities (1088 Budapest, 8th district, Múzeum körút 6-8 at metro station Astoria on line M2). 

The international rail network has one major hub in Budapest, the Eastern (Keleti) Railway Station (metro line M2). There are direct rail links between Budapest and 13 capital cities of Europe, and 47 international scheduled trains arrive daily to Budapest. Many international trains have dining and sleeping cars or couchettes. It's worth knowing that EU citizens (plus Norway and Switzerland) over 65 years of age, travel for free on all local trains in Hungary. All railway stations are served by one of the underground lines.

Numerous international coach services provide regular, frequent bus rides between Budapest and many other European locations, as well as the adjacent countries (Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Romania, etc.). The coach terminals of Népliget (metro line M3), Etele Square (near the Kelenföld Railway Station – metro line M4), or the Mexikói Road (metro line M1) are where the majority of international coach routes end.

Many boat companies run boat lines on the Danube, one of Europe’s busiest and most important waterways. From June to September, MAHART Passnave, the Hungarian state shipping company, runs a hydrofoil service between Budapest and Vienna, stopping in Bratislava.

Budapest is conveniently located for easy travel by flight; it takes 2-3 hours from most major European cities, 5-6 hours from the Middle East, and approximately 9 hours from the East Coast of the American continent. Budapest is home to several low-cost airlines in addition to the major airlines. The distance between Budapest city centre and Liszt Ferenc International Airport is roughly 20 km. The official airport website provides maps, flight information, and details on available services and transfer options.

Passengers arriving at the Ferenc Liszt Airport can get to the city centre by public transport, car or taxi (the official taxi company of the airport, Főtaxi, which has booths at both terminals).

A direct shuttle service - 100E Airport Express - provides a connection between the Airport and Budapest city centre, making only two stops en route, one at Astoria, our conference venue. Buses depart every 10 or 15 minutes, and the travel time to the City Center is around 40–45 minutes. Buses run around the clock, every 6-10 minutes during the day, every 10-15 minutes in the morning and evening, and every 20-40 minutes on average at night. The airport shuttle bus single ticket costs 2,200 HUF.

A cheaper option is the regular bus line, 200E, which operates day and night between Terminal 2 and Kőbánya-Kispest metro station (metro line M3). BKK single tickets, multi-day travel cards or passes are required for travel (prices). Budapest Metro opens every day at 4:30 am and runs until 11 pm. At night (23:00-4:00), bus 200E terminates at Határ út station, from where night bus lines 914, 914A, 950 and 950A will take you to the city centre.

The major expressways start from Budapest and typically head to the state border, constituting a radial network. Hungary has an electronic road toll payment system. You should purchase your e-sticker before entering the toll road. E-stickers are available on the internet (payable via bank card), at border crossing points, petrol stations and the customer offices of the National Toll Payment Services PLC. The easiest way to plan your route and buy your tickets and passes is by using the BudapestGO application. You can download it here for iOS devices and here for Android devices. Arriving from the airport you can use the Pay & Go devices to buy and validate tickets.

Budapest's public transport network covers the capital city well: you can get to any part of the city with the frequent metro trains, trams, trolleybuses and buses. There are four metro lines in Budapest, and the important points of the city centre are connected by a tram network. Several different types of tickets and passes are available. For 3 days, probably it is best to choose a 3-day pass, which is valid for 72 hours from the indicated date and time (month, day, hour, minute) for an unlimited number of trips. No validation is required after purchase. It is valid within the administrative boundaries of Budapest for almost all BKK services (metro, tram, trolley bus and bus), but this travel card is only valid on 200E, but not valid on the 100E Airport Express.
